Rangers made into the next round of the League Cup with a 3-2 victory over Sidmouth Town on Wednesday night. Twice we led by two goals but each time we were pegged bcak by a very dogged Vikings outfit.
We dominated the first period and took the lead on 20 minutes went the visitors were left short at the back after their own corner and Bailo set up Ash Donohue for a clear run at goal and he went to score with ease. Rangers had numerous chances to extend their lead but found the visiting keeper in fine form. Ash thought he had grabbed a second but the eagle eyed assistant had spotted that he had just strayed offside. A second goal eventually came on 40 minutes when Rhys Parsons was upended in the box and Bailo made no mistake with the spot kick. So at half time it was 2-0 and Rangers looked to be in control.
That was to change in the second period though when Sidmouth upped their game and pulled a goal back on the hour when Rangers failed to clear a corner. We quickly restored our two goal cushion when Brandon crossed for Ash to head home his second goal of the night. The visitors almost immediately pulled a goal back with a great strike from distance to make the score 3-2. Brandon Parsons was then brought down in the box but Bailo blasted the spot kick way over the bar to leave us with 15 minutes to see out before the final whistle blew to signal an away trip to Ivybridge in the next round.
Liam was happy with the result “That was the third game game for my lads in 7 days and I thought we looked a bit leggy in the second half which is not surprising after two really tough away games at Tavistock and Exmouth so to be in the next round is very pleasing and the lads deserve a lot of credit for the effort they put in. They can now put their feet up as we are without a game on Saturday.”
