Rangers had to work hard on Saturday to secure the £600 Prize Money for getting into the First Round Proper of the FA Vase. Their opponents, Budleigh Salterton from the East Division put up a spirited fight before going down 4-1 after extra time. Manager Hedley Steele was obviously very pleased to get through but was first to acknowledge that it was a hard earned victory. “It was by no means easy, we started the game and had a couple of good chances to to take the lead which would probably settled the nerves if we had been more clinical but a defensive slip gifted the visitors the goal and gave them confidence to dominate the remainder of the first half. It was’nt until 20 minutes from time that Dan Bialy set up Tom Beddow for our equaliser but it was extra time before we began to show our dominance and I think our fitness told in the end and we eventually finished well on top with a brace from Dan and another from Marcus Fanson giving a slightly flattering scoreline of 4-1.”
The draw for the First Round has given us another home draw, this time it is another Toolsation First Division side, Hengrove Athletic who currently sit fourth in the First Division. Hedley commented on the draw “We know a bit about them but hopefully we will get the chance to have a look at them before 22nd October but for the moment it is important that we put the Vase to the back of our minds and concentrate on catching up on our League fixtures starting at Tavistock on Tuesday night.”
