Rangers were without the services of the influential Adam Lanagbeer who was still recovering from the blow to the head he received against Axminster and Joe Wilkinson was working. Conor Bryant went back up front and George Painter started in lieu of Adam.
We were up against the only team in the league with a 100% record, Brixham had won all of their previous 8 matches but were shocked when only 10 minutes into the game we took the lead, Mike Humphreys heading in a Jack Bryant corner. Rangers looked in control but were shocked by a fluke equaliser when a cross hit Jack Lewis and nestled in the back of the net giving Luke Vernon no chance and The Fishermen were level and that’s how it remained until half time.
The second half was a stop start affair with numerous free kicks affecting the flow of the game and you felt that the next goal was going to come from a set piece and so it proved. Yet another free kick for what seemed like a harmless challenge was expertly delivered into the box and the Brixham central defender rose above evryone to nod home from six yards. Rangers sent on Ollie Nott and Josh Pearson and it was Josh who almost grabbed an equaliser but his close range effort came back of the post. With the game deep into injury time another free kick was awarded against us on the edge of the box(no complaints about this decision), Luke could only parry the fierce drive which fell kindly to the Brixham striker who tapped the ball home, game over.
Clive was philosophical about the result “the best team won but I was disappointed with the free kick which led to their equaliser, I felt Jack made a fair challenge to win the ball but the referee saw otherwise. Having said that perhaps we should have defended the free kick better but that it easier said than done, the ball was delivered expertly and the lad who scored is well over six feet and scored with a towering header. I thought we matched them all over the Park but we missed Langers and Joe who I think would have made a difference. But I can see why they are on a winning run and I think they will take some stopping this season”
