Before we set off across the River Tamar to Torpoint Athletic we would have all settled for a point but after the game Liam and the players were hugely disappointed that we did not come home with all 3 points after a very impressive second half display.
Rangers were without James Ansell who was in Prague and we were almost without the South Devon lads who went to The Ferryport originally instead of the Torpoint Ferry. Issac Reed slotted in beside Simon at the heart of the defence and new “Dad” Greeno came back at left back. Will Pinnock was given a first start in midfield and it was nice to see a full compliment of substitutes, including club captain Beechy, meaning that there was real competition in the squad.
The first half was a drab affair with chances few and far between although Adam was called into action just before half time when he was left one on one with ace Luke Cloke but he stood tall and forced the striker into a wide position and safety.
The second half saw the best of Rangers as we took the game to the home team. Lewis White saw his shot clip the crossbar and Ash Donohue forced the keeper into making a great save before having an effort cleared off the line. It was great to see Beechy back in action late on after suffering that bad knee injury on Boxing Day.
Liam was happy after the game although he felt that with a little luck we could have come away with a win. “It was great to have a full squad to choose from except for James Ansell and that means I now have a real headache when I have to select my starting line up which is a nice problem to have. That is another clean sheet which means that only league leaders Exmouth Town have a better defensive record than us. That is in no small measure down to 40 year old Hilly who was immense for us again but it is not just down to one player all the lads work really hard without the ball which frustrates the opposition, we just need to start taking a chance or two at the other end.”
