The U18s were looking to consolidate their position at the top of the Premier Division of the Somerset Floodlight Youth Football League against visitors, Clevedon Town, this evening.
Playing without Charlie Khan and Audie Campbell, both suspended, Cully began cautiously, working the ball from the back, testing the Clevedon defence. The first half, with fog swirling around the pitch in the cold windless night, continued throughout in this vein, both teams playing good football with few, if any, chances to either side.
The second period proved in complete contrast with, to the surprise of the 50 or so shivering supporters, five goals in all. Cully quickly took the lead through Harvey Newman who slotted home a perfect cross at the far post from Will Pitman, after fine work from James Davis. The second came soon after when Sam Rawlings slammed the ball into an empty net after it rebounded from the post following a great header, which itself deserved a goal, from Owen Buxton.
When Jack Smith slotted the third past the diving Clevedon glovesman it seemed all over. Clevedon had other ideas. however, and with 15 minutes to go scored two excellent goals to give Cully a difficult remaining 5 minutes added time. Despite the onslaught Cully, having made all three substitutions, held firm and completed their 4th win in 5 league outings to go 6 points clear at the top of the table.
