Bridport were the visitors for Tuesday’s evening game, looking for their first points of the season.
At the kick off, it was Bridport who were soon on the attack, winning a string of early corners, which were well dealt with by Cullompton’s defence. Cullompton were struggling to come to grips with a change of formation, playing five at the back, especially as Bridport were fielding a strong and tall side.
Nevertheless, Cullompton should have done better, when on a couple of occasions they were in great scoring positions, sadly spurning both chances.
Minutes before half time, a poorly taken Cullompton free kick was cleared up field, falling straight to an unmarked Bridport player, whose first time pass to a team mate, turned the ball home for the opening goal.
A disappointing ending to the first half, especially as Cullompton had battled well to contain the Bridport side.
Cullompton began the second half on the front foot, and with the pace of the forwards, causing problems for the visitors defence. Bridport made two substitutions to counter these attacks, but before they could settle, Lucas White popped up to equalise with an unstoppable shot from 25 yards.
Cullompton were matching Bridport now, especially as the manager had changed the formation back to four at the back. The game became very open, with both sides having chances, but it was Bridport who would break the deadlock, when a free kick was sent deep into the Cullompton penalty area. A moments lack of concentration allowed Bridport to score.
Cullompton are made of sterner stuff, and with the manager making several changes, they took the attack to the visitors.
Eventually their persistence paid off, when after being awarded a free kick on the corner of the penalty area, full back Lucas Coveny stepped up to curl his shot into the top corner.
This was no more than Cullompton deserved, and were even pushing for the winner before the referee blew the final whistle.
Against a strong visiting team this was a good result, but no doubt Cullompton would be disappointed in the manner Bridport got their goals.
Final score:-
Cullompton 2 Bridport 2.
