After last week’s postponement, Cullompton were on their travels with a trip to Newton Abbot Spurs, looking to get back to winning ways.
Cullompton couldn’t have got off to a better start when after 8 minutes, Cully’s Luke Jones was brought down, when through on goal. The referee had no choice but to produce a red card to the Newton defender. From the resulting free kick Sam Jones bundled the ball over the line for the opener.
This should have been the start that Cully wanted. However, as the game wore on, Newton began to get on top, and after 35 minutes a poor cross field pass from Cully was intercepted, allowing a Newton forward to break and score with a vicious swerving shot, deceiving keeper Will Davis.
The half ended with Newton well on top, and Cully looking for the break to regroup.
As the second half got underway, Cully hopes of resuming command were quickly dealt a blow, when another loose pass in midfield allowed Newton to break away and a score their second goal.
Newton were well on top now and had several chances to add to the score line. Which they duly did, when a cross from the right was turned in to make it 3.
Cully rarely looked capable of scoring in the second half, until late on when Lucas White was upended in the box, for Will Pinnick to convert.
Minutes later the referee blew the final whistle, which saw Newton Abbot Spurs celebrate an unlikely victory, and giving the Cully manager plenty think about before Good Fridays match at Bishops Lydeard.
Final score Newton Abbot Spurs 3 Cullompton 2.
