Cullompton were faced with an away trip to league leaders Ivybridge, looking to avenge their 4-1 home defeat earlier in the season.
The game began in bright sunshine but with a bitterly cold wind and it was Cully who began the brightest, taking the game to the home side. Ivybridge though, were tough to break down, with two big and agile central defenders snuffing out any goal scoring chances.
Ivybridge attacks were restricted to long balls through the middle, and on 37 minutes such a long ball was misjudged by Cully’s defence, allowing an Ivybridge forward to latch on to and open the scoring.
The home side were on top now and it wasn’t long before they increased their lead, when a poor Cully clearance allowed Ivybridge’s Jack Alexander to score his second goal.
There was a feeling amongst the few supporters who had made the trip that Ivybridge might run away with this game. However, once again Cully showed they are a more than useful side and could have reduced the lead when a cross from the left skidded off Ben Scott’s boot, but unfortunately rolled the wrong side of the post.
It would have been a good time to score, especially with the referee blowing for halftime.
From the restart, Cully were again on the attack, chasing an early goal. Once again they were thwarted by some good defending, and two excellent saves by the home keeper.
The half belonged to Cully, and apart from a couple of long range shots from Ivybridge hitting the Cully’s bar, Cully were well on top but were unable find the back of the Ivybridge net.
Final score Ivybridge 2 Cullompton 0.
