It was Western league opposition on Saturday for a FA Vase 2nd qualifying round.
Moments after the kick off, Cully’s injury woes continued, when Matt Futcher was involved in a clash of heads, and although he tried to play on, he had to be replaced. With three centre backs out injured, there was now a make shift back four – not the start Cullompton wanted.
However, Cully’s in-form forwards pushed forward, again creating untaken chances, with Aiden perhaps guilty of missing the chance of the game, when through on goal. This seemed to be a turning point of the game as Wells finished the half on top.
The second half began with both sides trying to establish superiority – chances at either end were sparse – but it was Wells who broke the deadlock, when a long kick out from the Wells keeper, was failed to be dealt with by Cully’s defence, allowing the left wing back to run in and score.
The home side began to push forward, but came across a disciplined defence and rarely troubled the goalkeeper. In the quest for an equaliser, Cully left themselves open for the counter attack, which is the way it went. Another break down the Cully right saw a pass into the penalty area converted by a Wells forward.
Now Cullompton pushed forward with purpose, looking to get back in the game. They created some good chances but were met either by some good saves from the keeper or poor finishing.
There was no more time, as the referee blew the final whistle.
Not the result Cullompton were looking for, ending their Wembley dreams for another season.
The team now have to pick themselves up on Wednesday night’s visit from Holsworthy in the County Cup competition.
