It was a surprise when today’s game got the go ahead, considering the heavy rain this week had washed out all other games in the league.
Cullompton gave a start to new signing Dan Kolta, who promptly repaid the manager’s decision when his shot was beaten out by the keeper, going straight to Lloyd White, who fired in the opener.
It wasn’t long before Dan got on the score sheet, when he rounded the keeper and slotted home from a narrow angle. He should have added a third goal minutes later but managed to balloon over from a Lloyd White cross.
Against the run of play Bovey got back into the game when a misdirected back pass by Sam Bryant exposed keeper Luke Vernon into bringing down a Bovey forward, the resulting penalty was expertly chipped home. This was the last action of an entertaining first half.
Bovey began the second half full of hope, buoyed on by their goal just before the break. However it was Cully who kept creating the chances with Connor Bryant leading the line and Lloyd and Dan making good runs; it wasn’t long before before Cullompton increased their lead when a through ball was latched on by Dan, who beat two defenders before deceiving the keeper and slotting into an open goal. This was just reward for Dan as minutes earlier he had been booked for an alleged dive whilst rounding the keeper. A decision only the referee could see.
At 3:1 the manager was able to make some changes. It was from two of these subs when a 4th goal was added, a free kick on the left was swung in by Jack Lewis, to be headed home by Jack Bryant .
That was how the game ended and it was no more than Cullompton deserved. Probably their best performance this year and with a very young side.
