Rangers took our winning run to 5 games after we proved too strong for a resolute Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police side on Saturday.
Unfortunately we lost George Painter in the warm up with a recurrence of hi knee problem so Josh Baxter stepped up from the subs bench.
It was one way traffic in the first half with Rangers dominating but a mixture of poor finishing and superb goalkeeping by the visitors goalie meant that the game was goalless after 40 minutes but then up stepped Mike Humphreys stepped up and finished a goalmouth scramble with a shot in the bottom corner and we were at last in the lead. Surely we would go on to win comfortably from here but then the normally reliable Luke Vernon in the Cully goal mishandled a long range effort to gift the visitors an equaliser. This was most unexpected as Luke has probably been our most consistent player during our winning run.
The second half was much of the same as the first and once againg it was Mike who came up with a goal from a set piece, heading home a Jack Lewis free kick. It should have been plain sailing from here but with half an hour still to go Reece Conroy was adjudged to have been the last man as he tangled with a Stoke forward and was given a straight red card leaving us to play the remainder of the game with ten men. This we managed to do with few alarms and to record our fifth straight win.
Clive was happy with the result but disappointed with the number of chances we missed “I know that their keeper was absolutely outstanding but we reallly should have been more clinical in front of goal. I thought we were guilty of taking too many touches but maybe that is a confidence thing.”
