A nine man strong reserve team battled bravely against a strong Colyton team who had been unbeaten until a midweek cup final defeat, eventually going down 4-0.
It was always likely to be a tough weekend for the club with a number of players following the British tradition of Blake and Huxley in studying the Dionysus theories around excess (i.e. going on a stag do), with numerous other absentees for a variety of reasons. However, the nine players who did manage the trip against a Colyton team that will surely win the league were a credit to the club, competing from the first to last whistle.
The goals were split evenly across the match, and reflected Colyton’s dominance of possession. Cullompton did look to get the ball down and play in their third of the pitch, and were unlucky not to get a penalty when Luke went down after a winding run with the score at 1-0. The Cullompton goal threat did diminish towards the end of the game when Dave Hawes, a player who hasn’t scored in 17 seasons, limped around upfront following an injury picked up at the end of the first half.
Every single player contributed and delivered in effort, communication and quality what was missing against Sidmouth midweek. All attention switches now to Tuesday’s game against Alphington, a win in which will go a long way to securing first division football next season.
