After a long uneventful coach journey the team was pleased to get the warm-up over and commence the contest. A small crowd welcomed the players to a tidy looking Bickland Park for what proved to be an entertaining encounter.
With Cully playing a short passing game and Falmouth using route one from the back, the two styles, whilst very different, resulted in end to end play throughout the first period. Within five minutes of the start Dom Aplin was quickly called into action for Cully, and saved well to his left at the far post.
The opening goal came when Ollie Aplin found himself on the right of the Falmouth area, sending a perfect low ball across, to be met with style by Tom Beddow, who hit a powerful right footed shot into the far corner of the net.
Some ten minutes later the referee awarded Falmouth a contentious penalty following an incident on the edge of the area. He then consulted his assistant, eventually pointing to the spot, despite the continued protestations of the Cully defence. After everything had settled down the Falmouth player charged with the spot kick disappointed the home supporters by striking the ball well over the Cully crossbar. Justice appeared to have been done !
The second half began with a spirited assault by Falmouth, however the Cully defence held firm, marshalled by the solid Lloyd Beech and evergreen Simon Hill. Headley then bought on Isaac Reed who quickly registered his presence on the game meeting an exquisite James Ansell cross to see his excellent header sail past the upright with the goal gaping wide.
The second Cully goal quickly followed when a looping Ollie Aplin header deceived everyone in the Falmouth defence to float over the ‘keeper into the back of the net. Headley then kept on the pressure with Danny Baily replacing the ever running Ollie up front and Frazer Clark giving Tom Bedow a well deserved rest in midfield.
Cully saw out the remainder of the contest, without incident, having achieved the double over Falmouth, in what proved to be a solid workmanlike performance on a pleasant away day in West Cornwall.
