Rangers exited from the FA Vase on Saturday suffering a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Ivybridge Town.
The game was thrown on it’s head after only 20 minutes when Jamie Down was shown a straight card to the surprise of most people on the ground. This was followed by a second yellow card for Steve Orchard on the hour, despite the fact that he made no contact with the player, but their was intent!
Before the first sending off both teams could have taken the lead with Ivybridge striking the inside of the post and then Bailo having a great chance to put the home side in front. Following the two dismissals Rangers were obviously defending for their lives until poor marking at a corner with just ten minutes to go opened the flood gates and the visitors coasted home.
There is no point in criticising the referee, he gave what he saw and acted accordingly but there is a real danger in the current climate that football will become a non contact sport and the art of tackling will simply no longer exist. Let’s hope that never happens.
