A last minute hotly disputed penalty robbed Rangers of the chance of taking on Plymouth Parkway in a penalty shoot out on Tuesday night in the semi final of the Edenvale Turf St Luke’s Cup. The game seemed destined for penalties when Beechy was adjudged to have fouled Jordan Annear in the box and up stepped Adam Carter to score off the post and rob Rangers of the chance of glory. Having already won penalty shoot outs against St Martin’s and Barnstaple I am sure we would have fancied our chances of going through but it was’nt to be.
Few people gave us much of a chance against our high flying Western League opponents but we shocked them by going ahead in the first minute when Ash Donohue latched on to a Tom Beddow through ball to score. It was now backs against the ball for Rangers who started with a five man back line who frustrated Parkway until ten minutes before half time when Jordan Annear showed his class scoring from close range. This was soon followed by a towering John Heveran header to give the visitors a 2-1 half time lead from which they would surely go on and win with ease. But the hosts had different ideas. Five minutes into the restart and Greeno set up Ash to get his second and 11th of the season as he executed a perfect lob from the edge of the box leaving the visiting keeper stranded. Ten minutes later Greeno was again in the thick of the action as his cross was helped in at the back post by Isaac Reed to give us an unexpected lead. We held out until ten minutes from the end when Carter swept a left wing cross home for the equaliser. We looked in control defensively until that last minute killer blow and a relieved Plymouth Parkway were in the final where we wish them all the best.
Liam cut a sad figure after the game ” I could not have been more proud of my lads who were terrific against a quality side. The lads all thought that the penalty decision was harsh, an opinion shared by some of the Parkway lads but the reefree gives what he sees and you have to respect that but it is still a bitter pill to swallow having worked your socks off for 89 minutes.”
