Saturday’s game was sponsored by the Club’s newly-formed 2nd eleven. A great gesture and I’m sure everyone will wish them every success for the coming season.
The game itself began in perfect conditions with the visitors, Stoke Gabriel, pushing forward looking for an early goal. Cullompton though had other ideas. With a resolute defence, they began to get on top, with Aiden and Lloyd both causing problems for the visitors, and on 15 minutes a snap shot from Lewis Hill, came back off the post, for the alert Aiden to tap home.
Cullompton continued to play attractive football, creating numerous chances. The visitors nearly took advantage of these misses, when a long ball into the Cullompton half, was latched onto by a Stoke forward, whose goal bound shot was well saved by Will Howard.
This was a wake up call for the home side, and on 40 minutes, good work down the right, resulted in Aiden setting up Lewis Hill to score.
Some of the ways Cullompton opened up the visitors defence was impressive, but the score remained 2-0, as the referee blew for half time.
The second half saw the visitors bringing a much stronger approach to the game, although not really threatening the Cullompton goal. It was Cullompton who looked most dangerous, and following another attack, the ball fell to Braydon Morris, who unleashed an unstoppable shot from 20 yards.
Cullompton were well on top now and from another break down the right, Aiden was brought down just inside the penalty area. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot, for Will Pinnick to step up and score, 4-0.
With the visitors seemingly accepting defeat, from a long ball into the Cullompton penalty area, which was only half cleared, allowing a Stoke player to score from close range.
Billy Spurway was introduced to bring a bit more energy to the Cullompton forward line, and it wasn’t long before before it paid off, when Billy chased down a kick from the keeper, slotting a great through ball for Lewis to score the 5th goal.
Just as you thought that was the end of the scoring, the visitors got their second goal when Cullompton failed to clear from an attack down the right.
Minutes after the restart, the referee blew for full time.
Much as Cullompton deserved to win, they will be kicking themselves for the way they conceded two late goals.
Final score Cullompton 5 Stoke Gabriel 2.
