A return to the seaside for Cullompton on Saturday with a visit to fast improving Sidmouth Town.
The manager had to make the trip with 5 regular players missing, with 2 others sat on the bench suffering with heavy colds. The manager said he was upbeat, adding that it gave a chance for several under 18s to impress.
At the KO there was a good start from the home side, attacking the makeshift Cully defence, and it wasn’t long before they pressed home with an early goal.
If the home supporters thought they were to see a lot more goals, they were to be disappointed; Cullompton responded with some great attacking play themselves, forcing the home side into some desperate defensive play, forcing a number of corners.
As half time approached Cully were caught with the old sucker punch, when a long ball into their half wasn’t dealt with, allowing a cross into the danger area for a Sidmouth player to turn it in for a second goal.
Moments after the restart, a loose pass in midfield was latched onto by a Sidmouth player, whose hopeful ball into the Cully area was easily converted 3:0. A real blow for a Cully side who had worked hard to stay in the game, only to be 3 goals down at half time.
The second period began with the the Cully manager introducing 2 more youngsters, giving them a taste for this higher grade football.
The game itself began with Cullompton searching to get back into the match. In chasing the game, Cully though were vulnerable at the back, and so it was that Sidmouth added to their total, breaking down the left, winning corner, and after a goal mouth scramble, they added a 4th goal.
Cullompton to their credit kept going until the final whistle.
The manager although disappointed with the result praised his young side for not giving up.
Next game is on Boxing morning with a 11:00 ko. When Cullompton entertain new comers to the league Bishops Lydiard.
Happy Christmas to you all.
