Cullompton welcomed Sidmouth for an evening KO. This would be Cullompton’s third game in 6 days. With an away trip to Dartmouth this Saturday, the players will need a rest before their final game away to Okehampton on Tuesday 30th April 7:30 KO.
Sidmouth started the game in a hurry, looking to add to the 6 nil thumping they gave Cullompton earlier in the season. After 10 minutes they could have been 3 or 4 up. As we all know it’s a funny old game, and Cullompton’s young side held out and were beginning to get back into the game when Sidmouth broke away and scored.
The response from Cullompton was tremendous, attacking down both flanks, causing panic to the Sidmouth defence. It wasn’t long before the equaliser came when Jack Bryant headed a cross into the danger area for Lewis Hill to bundle the ball in.
Cullompton were well on top, as the referee brought an end to the first half.
As the second half began, Cullompton showed that they would continue to attack Sidmouth, nearly taking the lead when a goal bound shot from Aiden was diverted for a corner. Cullompton were playing well with a lot of maturity for such a young side, when out of nowhere, Sidmouth scored, taking advantage of slack marking from a throw in, allowing a Sidmouth forward to slot home from close range.
Cullompton’s response was to go straight back on the attack, and it wasn’t long before they equalised, following good work from Aiden Horne, the ball broke to Lucas White, who scored with a screamer from 20 yards.
Minutes later Cullompton increased their lead when Aiden Horne ran onto a through ball, outpacing the defence to score.
Minutes from the final whistle, Lewis Hill was brought down by the keeper, winning a penalty. Unfortunately Lewis was badly injured, and Cullompton probably thought it was an injustice when the keeper saved the resulting kick.
The referee now added 10 minutes extra time but Cullompton easily saw the game out.
Final score. Cullompton 3 Sidmouth 2.
