High flying Okehampton were the visitors to Adoptstar Park for Saturday’s league game.
Okehampton kicked off on a very sodden pitch following heavy overnight rain.
The first 15 minutes saw both sides looking to take control, but neither created any chances. Then out of the blue, a harmless punt into the Cullompton penalty area, saw a moment of indecision between the keeper and a defender, which allowed an Okehampton player to head into an open goal.
From the restart, Cullompton changed their system and immediately showed their intent, forcing a number of corners and bringing out several good saves from the Okehampton keeper.
The rest of the half was played out at a hectic pace, which said a lot about both sides fitness in the heavy conditions.
Cullompton kicked off the second half knowing that they had to take the game to Okehampton, and for the first 25 minutes of the half they were well on top, with the visitors keeper being kept busy.
Then against the run of play, Cullompton shot themselves in the foot, when from an innocuous back pass, keeper Will Howard tried to dribble out of the area only to be tackled by a Okehampton forward, who had the easiest task of scoring.
A mountain to climb for Cullompton, to come back from 2-0 down. To their credit they didn’t sit back and should have scored, when a cross from the right, unfortunately eluded Aiden’s outstretched leg.
It seemed that this was the game for gifting the opposition goals, when Mike Humphries upended an Okehampton forward in the area. Not only a penalty, but a sending off for Mike.
The penalty was easily converted, putting the game out of sight for Cullompton.
However this was not the end of Cullompton’s misery, when Ben Scott was sin binned for 10 minutes, for something he said to the referee.
Okehampton added a fourth goal minutes before the final whistle.
