Cullompton’s final game of the season was a midweek fixture, away to Okehampton. A tough challenge for Cullompton where a victory would round off a good season, and a mid-table finish. For Okehampton, they had a chance of the runners up spot with a win.
After heavy rain leading up to the game, Okehampton kicked off in bright sunshine, and were immediately on the attack. It’s important that I mention that Okehampton had strengthened their team with a number of Southern league players from a neighbouring Club. Cullompton on the other hand had a number of key players missing through injury.
As the half wore on, the game became more even, with both keepers making important saves. It was Okehampton though, who opened the scoring, when a
cross from Cullompton’s left side was headed home.
From the restart, Cullompton showed their intent, forcing a number of corners and coming close to the equaliser. Half time came with the score remaining 1:0.
After the break, Cullompton continued to take the game to Okehampton, forcing the home keeper into 3 or 4 very good saves. As it is the way in games like this, a rare Okehampton break away resulted in a scrambled second goal. As they say – no justice in this game!
Cullompton were to pay the price for the missed chances, and very little luck.
Final score 2-0.
It has been a pleasure to watch this young side develop as this season wore on.
The manager will now hope, with the foundation in place, he can build on this side next season.
