Cullompton welcomed Newton Abbot Spurs on Saturday, led by the temporary management team of Tom Pilling and Matthew Scott. This follows the resignation of Steve Orchard, who is joining Tiverton Town.
Newton Abbot Spurs kicked off, looking to leap frog Cullompton at the top of the table. Right from the start they showed their intentions, gaining an early corner, giving the Cullompton defence a warning of their intentions.
As the half wore on, it was Cullompton who had the better chances, with Cameron Webb giving the Spurs defence a torrid time with his harassing and willingness to make runs into the box. It was from one of these runs that Cullompton opened the scoring: Cameron’s pass to Lewis Hill resulted in him being upended by the keeper. The referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty, from which Lewis tucked it away with ease.
The rest of the half was played out at a furious pace, with both sides looking to get on top. With no change to the score line the referee brought the half to an end.
Kicking off in the second half Cullompton were on the attack, forcing an early corner, which was comfortably dealt with by the Spurs keeper.
Cullompton were wary that Newton Abbot Spurs could catch them on the break, and it was midway through the half when a misjudged pass in midfield allowed a Newton player to run through on goal to score a very good equaliser.
If Newton Abbot Spurs thought they would press on for the winner, they would be wrong as it was Cullompton who took the attack to them, creating several chances, pinning them in their own half.
Whilst the game seemed to be heading for a draw, Lewis Hill intercepted up a loose pass in midfield, running into the area drilling his shot into the corner of the net.
During the celebrations the referee produced a red card to a Newton Abbot Spurs defender, for foul and abusive language to an official.
Minutes after the restart, the referee blew for full time.
A mention for the young referee, who had a splendid game. Good luck to him
