Cullompton welcomed Newton Abbot Spurs to Adopstar Park on Saturday.
Cully had Sam Bryant and Ben Scott back from their one match suspensions.
Newton began the game brightly, pushing forward looking for an early strike. Cully though were resolute in defence and gradually grew into the game.
Just as Cully thought they were on top, Newton were awarded a free kick on the half way line, and from the kick a long ball into the penalty area left an unchallenged Newton player to score.
Right from the KO Cully were on the attack, again creating chances, and from such an attack, Lewis Hill latched onto a through ball to score from the edge of the area. Cully were well in control now, and it wasn’t long before Cully increased their lead when they were awarded a penalty. Aiden Horne duly stepped up to score.
Cullompton were on top now, but they were to be dealt a blow when from a rare Newton attack, Lloyd White was guilty of a rash tackle, resulting in a second yellow card and a sending off. With the withdrawal of Jack Bryant with injury, Cully had to withstand the last ten minutes of the half with 10 men. Half time couldn’t come quickly enough.
The second half brought a change of formation with Ben Scott and Aiden dropping into midfield, leaving Lewis Hill on his own up front.
After the initial attacks from Newton, Cully settled into the game well, with Sam Bryant influential in defence and Harry Varnals marshalling the midfield; they were able to repel any attacks thrown at them. Newton though had a great chance to get back into the game when they were awarded a penalty. A soft decision maybe, but Newton’s captain blasted over from 12 yards.
Cullompton played out the remaining minutes of the game, and ran out deserved winners.
The manager said he was more than pleased with the performance of his players, and said it showed how far the team had come this season.
A great result after last weeks disappointing loss.
