On Tuesday evening Cullompton were on their travels, to face Newton Abbot Spurs. This would be a tough test, as these opponents are among the favourites to win the league.
From the kick off Cullompton started the brighter, winning an early corner. The home team gradually grew into the game though, and showed they could be dangerous on the counter attack.
All that changed, when on 20 minutes Aiden was hauled down as he broke through on goal, resulting in the Spurs captain being sent off.
Although the free kick was wasted, a few minutes later from a similar position, full back Lucas Coveny stepped up to score with a curling shot into the top corner.
Cullompton were well on top, and from another free kick the ball fell to Lloyd White in the penalty area to stab home Cullompton’s second.
The remainder of the half saw Cullompton going close to increasing their lead, before the referee called time on the half.
If Cullompton thought that Spurs were going to accept defeat in the second half, they would be in for a shock. Right from the opening whistle, Spurs showed they were up for the challenge. With only 10 minutes of the half gone they scored, when Cullompton failed to clear a low cross into their area.
Although Spurs were on top, Cullompton’s defence were disciplined and restricted any efforts on goal. Just as Cullompton thought they had weathered the storm, they were unfortunate to concede a penalty, when a Spurs cross struck a defender’s hand. Although it appeared that the hand was by his side, the referee pointed to the spot, which was duly converted 2-2 (Where was VAR?).
The rest of the game was played out without either side creating any real chances.
Whilst Cullompton will be disappointed with the result, they should be delighted in gaining a point away to a top side like Newton Abbot Spurs.
