Saturday saw Cullompton welcoming Middlezoy Rovers to Adoptstar Park. This would be Middlezoy’s first visit to Cullompton, after gaining promotion last season.
As it was a reunion day for past players, there was a large crowd who watched the kick off.
In perfect conditions it was Middlezoy who created an early chance, shooting over when well placed.
Cullompton were looking for the form that they showed on Tuesday evening, when winning their semi- final tie against Crediton, but they struggled to take control of the game.
As the half wore on, Cullompton came alive, with both wingers causing problems for the Middlezoy defenders.
It was from such a move that Cullompton should have taken the lead, when a Zac Williams low cross somehow evaded everyone, and rolled out of play.
The rest of the half was played out with neither goal keeper tested. The referee blew for halftime.
Goalless when the second half kicked off, it was Middlezoy who opened the scoring, when after two minutes, they won a throw deep into the Cullompton half, and with Cullompton’s defence sleeping, they took the lead with a shot at the far post.
Now Cullompton started to wake up, again using the wide men to create chances. It took ten minutes to draw level, after good play between the White brothers saw captain Lucas score.
It wasn’t long before Cullompton took the lead, when the Middlezoy keeper could only parry a shot from Aiden Horne, to see Lloyd White followup to score.
This should have been the signal to score more goals but they seemed to take their foot off the pedal, looking to run the game out.
They were to pay the price for this, when a harmless punt into their penalty area was turned in via a miskick to level the scores. With all to play for now, and deep into injury time with the Cullompton defence in disarray, Middlezoy scored the winner when their centre forward turned the ball home for his hat trick.
There was no time for Cullompton to equalise, as the referee brought the game to an end.
Final score Cullompton 2 Middlezoy 3.
Cullompton should be kicking themselves for letting the game slip away from them. Fair play to Middlezoy who never gave up and in the end probably deserved their win.
