For their penultimate game of the season, Cullompton travelled the short distance to Honiton.
Honiton have been a bit of a bogey team in recent seasons and with last Saturday’s disappointing loss, Cullompton would be looking to get back on track.
In the absence of the injured Braydon Morris, Cully welcomed back Will Pinnick, after a long time out.
Honiton kicked off and right away were on the attack, with both their wingers giving Cullompton’s defenders early trouble.
Cullompton’s attempts to get into the game were met by some tough tackling and Honiton’s willingness to win the ball.
Gradually Cullompton were able to get their passing game going, and began to create several good chances.
Lewis Hill was unlucky to see his goal bound effort cleared off the line, and Cameron Webb also had a shot miraculously also cleared off the line.
Honiton also had their chances but never really troubled Finn in the Cullompton goal.
Half time came, with a 0-0 scoreline.
Cullompton kicked off the second half playing down the slope, and it took a while to adjust to the pace of the ball, off the speedy surface.
As in the first period neither team were on top, although Cullompton did create the better chances.
Then after 18 minutes came an incident that was to change the game, when a pretty poor challenge by a home defender was judged by the referee to be dangerous, and he had no hesitation in sending the offender off.
Naturally the home side were to dispute the decision, and after many minutes of protest, the referee showed one persistent protester a yellow card and 10 minutes in the sin bin.
Cullompton wouldn’t have a better chance to go on and win this game, and it didn’t take long before they took the lead. A long ball into the box was latched on by Lewis Hill, and with the home defence appealing for offside, he calmly scored.
On 77 minutes Lewis Hill added his and Cullompton’s second goal after he received the ball in the opposition penalty area.
Cullompton were well on top now and could have and maybe should have increased their lead further, with a host of missed chances.
The 90 minutes were up, but the referee was intent in adding time for the amount of stoppages, because of the sending off and other offences.
Honiton took advantage of the added time when a sloppy piece of defending by Cullompton allowed Honiton to score.
Added time was up to 22 minutes before the referee eventually blew for full time.
Final score Honiton 1 Cullompton 2
