After a blank weekend last Saturday, Cullompton returned to action with a trip to Plymouth side, Elburton Villa.
There was a blow for Cullompton when in the pre-match warm up, Lewis Hill suffered a recurrence of his leg injury, which had forced him off against Sidmouth.
From the kick off, Elburton immediately showed that they were intent on spoiling any intentions Cullompton had in playing attacking football.
With only 10 minutes gone, an awful two-footed tackle on Harry Varnalls, gave the referee no choice in sending the Elburton player off. From the restart it became obvious that Harry could not continue, and was replaced by recent signing Sully McKenna
If Cullompton thought they would run away with the game they were in for a surprise. It it was the home team with one man down, who took control, using their experience and physical presence to pressurise the Cullompton side, creating a number of chances.
Cullompton thought they had held out to half time, but when a poor clearance was pounced on by an Elburton midfielder, whose pass was rhen turned in by the centre forward.
Minutes from the restart the referee blew for half time.
From the start of second half, and with manager Richard Pears making several positional changes, Cullompton showed their intentions, attacking down both flanks.
Then after 55 minutes, after good play down the right, Ben Scott blasted in the equaliser.
With the Elburton’s players tiring, Cullompton were in control, and on 75 minutes they took the lead, when Lloyd White won the ball on the edge of the penalty area, and with great control, lobbed the Elburton keeper.
The remainder of the game was played in Elburton’s half, with Cullompton pushing to increase their lead. With no further score, the referee brought the game to an end.
Final score Elburton 1 Cullompton 2.
It’s worth mentioning the influence Craig Woodman is having on this Cullompton team, with his experience and his encouragement, rubbing off on his team mates.
