Cullompton welcomed Bovey Tracey who were looking to avenge their 4-1 defeat by Cullompton earlier this season.
Today’s game was sponsored by Doreen Partridge and family in memory of long time club stalwart “Rocket” Ron.
The game began on a difficult playing surface with heavy frost over the past week breaking through the surface. Credit should go to Cully’s ground staff for getting this game on.
Cully got off to their usual fast start, creating a number of early chances, that should have been converted.
Bovey steadily got back into the game, with the son of former Cully favourite Alvin Pollard causing problems, with his darting runs into the Cully penalty area. It was from one of these runs that he was upended in the area to win a penalty. The referee thought that as he was in a goal scoring position, he had to show a red card to the offender, Sam Bryant. Bovey scored from the spot taking the lead.
Cully were up against it now, having been reduced to 10 men and they did well to hold out until half time.
The half time break seemed to do wonders for Cully, as they attacked from the restart, and it was as if Bovey hadn’t realised Cully were down to ten men. The home side were well on top, and it wasn’t long before they got a deserved equaliser albeit from the penalty spot, which Will Pinnick duly converted.
There was only one team in it now, even after having Ben Scott sent off for a foul on Kelson Pollard.
With Cullompton down to nine players, Bovey should have taken the initiative, but Cully had other ideas and it was them that created the best chances before the referee blew the final whistle.
A thoroughly deserved point from an enjoyable game.
Well done Cullompton.
