Saturday saw Cullompton making the short trip to Bovey Tracey, the first game for the new manager Richard Pears.
From the kick off, Bovey Tracey showed why they have won their last two games, especially after a poor start to the season. They pushed forward with both wingers causing problems for the Cullompton defence.
As the half wore on, Cullompton worked their way into the game, with Aiden troubling the Bovey defence with his dribbling skills and creating half chances that weren’t taken.
The game see-sawed this way and that, with both sides having chances. With the game remaining goalless, the referee blew for half time.
The second half saw an enforced change for Cullompton, with Lewis Hill having a recurrence of a thigh problem, being replaced by Zac Williams.
It wasn’t long before Zac latched on to a mistake by a defender, cutting in from the right; his well hit shot was tipped over by the keeper.
With Braden Morris controlling the midfield, Cullompton gave the Bovey defence problems, and it only got worse for them when a Bovey defender disputed a refereeing decision and received a red card.
Shortly after the sending off, Aiden Horne harried a Bovey defender into a mistake, then rounded the keeper to open the scoring.
Cullompton were well on top now, and should have added to their score line, creating but not taking those chances.
Bovey defended in numbers, and following a poor free kick from Cullompton, they cleared the ball up field, then took advantage of another defensive mistake to level the scores.
With Bovey’s tails up it was Cullompton’s turn to defend, but with new signing Mike Humphries organising the defence, they were comfortably holding out. Cullompton weathered the storm: they broke away down the left, winning a free kick on the edge of the Bovey penalty area. Up stepped Lloyd White, who had fluffed his kick earlier, but made no mistake this time, scoring what was the winning goal.
There was no time for the restart as the referee blew for full time.
A winning start for the new manager, who should be pleased with his side’s performance.
