The morning kick off began in bright sunshine, although I’m sure that many people could not believe that – after the atrocious weather of late – the game would go ahead.
The first 45 minutes was a half to forget with both sides guilty of poor possession and sloppy passing. Both goalkeepers were taking frequent goal kicks following wayward attempts at goal, and it wasn’t until the 43rd minute that the first corner was awarded. As the clouds gathered, the referee, to the relief of the spectators, brought the half to an end.
The second half began in light rain, with Cullompton making the early running. With the early introduction of 16 year old debutant Zack Williams they looked far more dangerous. The home team, to their credit, defended well, and looked threatening on the break. The second half was becoming far more entertaining than the first, and from only their second corner of the game, Cullompton took the lead when Aiden Horne bundled the ball home.
The game became more frenetic with Bishops Lydeard searching for an equaliser and Cullompton defending their lead.
On the 85th minute the home side scored, when Cully failed to make a tackle, allowing a home forward to get a shot off, which trickled into the far corner.
Right from the restart Cullompton were on the attack and with the introduction of Finn Crocker creating problems down the right, Cully bagged the winner deep into injury time. A short corner, found its way to Zack Williams who cooly scored from close range.
There was barely time for the restart when the referee blew the final whistle.
Next we saw both players and management involved in a mass altercation. Not the impression to give to the young players of both sides, or with their parents looking on!
