The new season began with an away trip to Axminster.
The temperature at kick off was 25 degrees, which was more suitable for cricket.
Both sides were to field young and with some inexperienced players. And it was Cullompton who were immediately on the attack, stretching the Axminster defence with quick passing and movement. However, it was Axminster who nearly opened the scoring, when a long clearance into the Cullompton half was latched on to by an Axminster forward, who should have done better when through on goal.
Cullompton immediately took advantage of this miss, breaking down and winning a corner, from which Aiden Horne headed the opening goal.
Cullompton began to get on top, winning a lot of possession, and with pace provided by wide men, Lloyd White and Zac Williams, causing lots of problems. It wasn’t long before Aiden increased the lead, stabbing home from 6 yards.
Axminster were struggling to get back into the game, when Lewis Hill pounced on a mix up from keeper and defender to walk the ball home.
It was to get worse for Axminster when George Russell scored his first goal for the Club, heading home from a corner.
Another break down the right, saw Lewis Hill receiving the ball in the box, turning and scoring Cullomptons fifth.
There was still time for Cullompton to add another before halftime, when great work from Lewis Hill, crossing from the left, saw debutant Billy Spurway scoring. No time for the restart as the referee blew for half time.
As the second half began, Cullompton supporters were anticipating more goals, but had to wait for the 65th minutes for the next goal, when Lloyd White playing a one two with brother Lucas before blasting home from 12 yards.
To their credit, Axminster never stopped trying, and from a rare breakaway, a cross field shot come pass bounced off the top of the Cullompton’s cross bar.
Almost directly from the goal kick another debutant, Leo Baraball, headed home his first goal for the Club.
On a disappointing note a Cullompton player was sin binned for poor language towards the official; our disciplinary record was not good last season, so let’s hope this will be an isolated incident.
Despite being down to 10 men , Cullompton were still playing attractive football, and added three more goals in the final 12 minutes, through Lucas White, Billy Spurway again and Zac Williams.
Final score Axminster 0 Cullompton 11.
Overall a good performance, and they must carry this form forward to their game at Bishops Lydeard on Tuesday evening, with a 19:30 KO.
